Assignment #10 - Building a “Treatment”

In addition to this being similar to what you may experience with a real client, being able to precisely communicate your vision in a tangible form, like a treatment, will not only help you execute your image much more effectively, but also increase your value as a photographer and artist.

For this assignment, you're going to be taking the mood board you created from your last assignment and building a treatment from it.

You can create a treatment in any way you feel comfortable with.

To hopefully make things simple for everyone, I'll recommend creating your treatment in Google Slides just as you saw in the video lesson.

If you do not have a Google account, then...find a way to create your own treatment. Treat this like a real client shoot! This is where you have to be resourceful.

Remember the point of the treatment in this case: You're taking 4 fundamental aspects of your idea and giving a concise but detailed description for each of them to help you practice formalizing the ideas that you come up with and being able to communicate them to others, especially for potential or current clients.

The four main aspects are:

  1. Concept/Story

  2. Color Palette

  3. Props used

  4. Lighting

There are some other important factors that most likely will come up in client conversations such as what is the image resolution and what will the aspect ratio need to be.

You do not need to worry about these for this assignmentbut it may be helpful to keep in mind.

Therefore, your assignment is as follows:

Create a treatment for the brief assigned in assignment 7, presenting concise but detailed descriptions of your idea separated into the 4 categories mentioned above. Create it in any format you wish, but using Google Slides is recommended for simplicity.

You can submit screenshots of your slides to the private Discord server. The thread will be open to discussions pertaining to this topic, so you can ask your questions there as well!

If you decide to use Google Slides, here are the steps I took to make the treatment I shared in the previous video:

Step 1

Head to slides.google.com

Step 2

Create a new presentation by clicking on the "+" sign.

Step 3

Choose your slide theme

Step 4

Apply a 2-column layout by going to Slide > Apply Layout > "Section title and description"

Step 5

Create 3 more slides by duplicating the first slide. To duplicate a slide, right-click on the slide in the left-hand column and select "duplicate slide". Repeat this step to create 4 total slides.

Step 6

Label each slide with the 4 categories mentioned above in their respective title areas.

Step 7

Add your mood board images to the right side of the slides. Click on the picture icon in the toolbar and import your images in any of the ways presented there. Or you can simply drag and drop them into the slide if the images are saved on your computer.

Step 8

Just add your descriptions for each slide and you're done!

Good luck and looking forward to seeing what you come up with!
