Assignment #2: Seeing and Capturing Light

In the previous lesson, we discussed how light can affect the objects it illuminates. In general, it does this in 4 main ways:  It creates dimension. It creates separation. It reveals texture. And it evokes emotion.

Your assignment is as follows:

Using natural light or artificial light, create 1 image that demonstrates all of these characteristics. Also include at least one BTS photo of your setup.

Post your result in our Discord channel.

One example from my own work is the peanut butter and jelly sandwich that I shot not too long ago. The way I positioned the lights created light and shadow, giving the stack dimension.

The distance at which I placed these lights also allowed the light to create separation from the background. The light helps reveal a lot of the texture of the stack and how the subject is lit overall helps give this stack of sandwiches a strong desire over the food itself.

You do NOT need to create an image with this amount of technicality. This exercise is meant for you to practice the act of seeing how light affects objects and using that to create your own image that demonstrates these characteristics.

Looking forward to seeing what you create!
